How do you quote something already in single quotes?

I understand the American usage for quotations is to quote with double quotes, and if your quotation itself contains a quotation, to put that in single quotes.

But what do you do if your quoting a writer who’s originally using single quotes? Do you maintain them or change them into double quotes?

  1. hemlockknot says:

You’re 3. What you’re reading is 2. Who originally said the sentence is 1. Find out who the writer you are quoting was quoting and quote that instead. You might have to look up another source, but then instead of “3″2′1′ ” ” You can do “3′1′ ” .
