How do you quote something already in single quotes?

I understand the American usage for quotations is to quote with double quotes, and if your quotation itself contains a quotation, to put that in single quotes.
But what do you do if your quoting a writer who’s originally using single quotes? Do you maintain them or change them into double quotes?
