I won 2 fish today at a carnival, but I’ve never had fish before and don’t know what to do.I don’t have a tank or even a bowl for them, and I don’t think my parents would want to spend the money on one.I don’t know what to do :[
My friend is letting me borrow her tank for them, and she is helping me to know how to care for them.

They would be 2 common goldfish if you won them and they need at least a 50 gallon tank to survive well.

if they are golfish they should be pretty hardy. But a small goldfish bowl is like under 5 bucks. just get a small bowl and fish food is like a dollar. So get those things and you should be fine. just don’t feed them everyday, more like every other day. that would make bowl cleaning that much more harder. O and get used to clean out the bowl a lot, becasue since you don’t have a real tank, you can’t get a filter, and if they are goldfish, they will poop a lot.

DON’T let them go outside somewhere. They can destroy an ecosystem, seriously.

Find a container for them, some dechlorinator and some goldfish food from a store and follow the directions on the bottles, float the bags of water in the container of water for a long time before you let them out. Gradually let them out into their new home. Change 1/2 their water every few days and replace it with water that’s been dechlorinated and is the same temperature. You can get a little syphon to suck the poop out from the bottom of their container. Or, you can catch them with a net, put them in another container with some of their original water and then dump out the rest of the water that includes the poop. Then dechlorinate and replace the fish plus half of their original water.

you’ll have to buy a tank (probably 50 gallons – which is like $150-$250), you’ll need a filter, gravel plants and whatnot. A testing kit to moniter their water.

If you can’t do all that, you’ll have to sell them, or try to bring them to a petstore right away and give them away.

what you should do is not accept pets you cannot care for ;)

give em to a fish store they’ll take em

do you have any friends with bowls? extra bowls? you can put them in a flower vase or an extra bowl that maybe a friend has, FOR NOW! ASAP you have to get a 30 gallon tank. ok? earn up money by mowing lawns baby sitting ect. please get a 30 gallon ASAP though!

See if a local petstore will take them. With a carnival in town there’s likely to be a rash of people with the same problem. I wish carnivals would quit this practice (fish left over when its time to move on just get chucked out on the fields, lovely).

Caring for these fish (either goldfish or rosy red minnows) will cost money and a huge learning curve. If you and your parents are not prepared for this rehome the fish.

sorry to say any pet fish if you get it from a carnival or pet store will eventually die in less than a week. are they the kind they keep in a bag? then it will be less than 3 days. you’ll have to go to the pet store and buy a bowl, fish food and water conditioner used only for bowls. I’ve kept goldfish about a good 2 yrs with frequent water changes and made sure the water was never too warm by keeping direct sunlight from heating the water or too cold by keeping it away from drafty windows. also don’t overfeed sprinkle enough until they stop eating. but also don’t underfeed feed every other day. good luck

    Carnival fish should be illegal.
The fish you won are common goldfish, and require at least a thirty gallon aquarium, complete with a very efficient filter. Setting up an aquarium should always be done prior to obtaining a fish. A tank has to cycle before ay fish are added to be sure that the water is ready for them.

Do not use a bowl! Goldfish produce a lot of waste which becomes ammonia. Ammonia is lethal to fish. In a bowl this ammonia builds up and poisons them. They need larger tanks so that their waste has room to dilute. Goldfish need a filter to keep their water clean.
Also, goldfish get huge. They can grow up to a foot in length. Contrary to popular belief, they do not grow to the size of their environment. Goldfish have a general lifespan of 20 years. Living in a bowl cuts them down to months, or at most a year.

Take the easy way out- Find someone with a goldfish pond. A pond is ideal for these fish.

They are NOT common goldfish, they are comet goldfish (slight difference, it doesn’t matter much.) For the time being, Keep them in the biggest clean container you have, poke holes in the lid, and don’t clean it with soap, just use water.

Convince your parents to buy you a fish tank, at least 5 gallons (for now) it may be expensive but your goldfish WILL die unless you do so. MAKE SURE IT HAS A FILTER!!!!!!!
Change filter cartridge every 2-3 weeks. Clean tank using gravel vacuum every week. (Everything I’m saying is essential for the survival of your fish, trust me, I have had much experience with goldfish!)

Goldfish cannot live in that environment for too long, because they will get big, and although comet goldfish don’t grow as fast if the tank is small, they still need more room.

Once you have saved up enough money, purchase a 15 gallon tank MINIMUM, with a power filter, gravel substrate, aquatic plants, AN AERATOR (that is a must!) and perform 25% water changes every 1-3 weeks.

When you change water, new water MUST be dechlorinated with water dechlorinater (which can be purchased at any petstore) the best brand is AmQuel. I recommend also treating water with NovAqua and Aquarium salt to make your fish happy. For new fish tanks, treat water with StressZyme when cycling. Feed your goldfish Tetra brand flake food designed for goldfish. DO NOT OVERFEED it will kill your fish.
